Prepare For Spring 2025

North Florida Spring Lawn Preparation

1. Clean Up and Prepare:

  • Remove Winter Debris:
Rake away fallen leaves, dead grass, and any other debris that may have accumulated over the winter.

  • Dethatch:
If you have a thick layer of thatch (a layer of dead and decaying grass between the soil and the living grass), dethatch your lawn to improve air, water, and nutrient flow to the roots.

2.Mowing Height:

  • St Augustine Grass:   Recommended lawn height of 3.5-4 inches, mowing every 7-14 days during active growth

  • Bahia Grass:    Maintain a height of 3-4 inches, mowing every 7-14 days during active growth, and more frequently during the peak of summer to manage seed heads. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn, as they decompose quickly and provide nutrients back to the lawn.

3. Soil Health:

  • Aerate:
Aerate your lawn to relieve soil compaction, allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively.

  • Soil Test:
Consider testing your soil to determine pH levels and nutrient deficiencies, helping you choose the right fertilizer.

  • Amend Soil:
If necessary, amend your soil with compost or other organic matter to improve its structure and fertility.

4. Weed and Pest Control:

  •  Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicides:
Apply pre-emergent herbicides to prevent weed seeds from germinating, especially before the warm weather arrives.

  • Watch for Pests:
Be vigilant for pests like grubs, cinch bugs, sod webworms, and mole crickets, which can damage your lawn.

5. Fertilize and Water:

  • Fertilize:
Fertilize your lawn after new growth begins, typically in March, using a fertilizer appropriate for warm-season grasses.

  • Water Regularly:
Water your lawn regularly, especially during dry spells, to promote healthy growth.
Set up a spring irrigation schedule:
Make sure your irrigation system is working properly and set up a schedule to water your lawn effectively.

Keeping your lawn looking its best requires ongoing care and attention. Our maintenance services include mowing, weed trimming, edging and of course the finishing touches of clean up. Although we don't seed or feed your lawns plenty of water of course when it does not rain's a lot, we recommend that if you have a source of irritation.  I would recommend running your irrigation per recommendation by the manufacturer or irrigation service team.
